OpenAI brings GPT-6 and Intelligent UI experiences to users

OpenAI introduces GPT-6 and Intelligent UI in ChatGPT, enabling visual responses, interactive tools and progressive answers, with access varying across plans and supported clients.

The ChatGPT update can turn an answer into an interactive comparison, diagram or on-the-spot tool, while its availability varies across plans, reasoning settings and supported devices.

OpenAI brought GPT-6 and Intelligent UI to ChatGPT on 7 October 2026, introducing responses that can combine ordinary text with interactive interfaces built around a user’s question. The release allows the assistant to present diagrams, comparisons, charts and tools within a conversation, while retaining a conventional text answer when that is the clearer format.

In its official launch announcement, OpenAI demonstrated an interactive bicycle diagram, visual learning aids and tools such as a savings calculator, bill splitter and simple game. These are examples of interfaces created for particular requests, rather than a replacement for every existing ChatGPT response.

Answers can contain controls rather than just explanations

Intelligent UI lets ChatGPT decide how a response should be organised. A comparison can appear side by side; a concept can be explored through an adjustable illustration; and a calculation can be handled with an interactive tool in the same chat. OpenAI says users do not need to request a special mode to receive these formats.

The company describes an underlying library of native interface components and a compiler that assembles the display as the model generates its answer. Components can include charts, buttons and forms. According to OpenAI, the system was trained to choose when those elements clarify a response and when text alone is sufficient. The resulting interface is generated for the question, rather than selected from one fixed answer layout.

GPT-6 can begin responding before its work is complete

The release also changes when users see an answer. OpenAI says GPT-6 can start presenting useful material while it continues reasoning or using tools, then add subsequent findings as they become available. The company reports faster first responses in internal tests, including web-search tasks, although those comparisons are not independently validated performance measurements.

This progressive delivery is separate from Intelligent UI’s interactive presentation. One determines when an answer begins appearing; the other determines whether users can inspect or operate elements inside it.

Availability depends on the ChatGPT experience

OpenAI said the rollout began on 7 October for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise in Chat, with expansion to Free and Go scheduled from 8 October. Enterprise administrators retain control over access. The company identified GPT-6 Sol for eligible paid Chat users and GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go in its launch material. Its current Help Center documentation is inconsistent on the Free/Go designation: the Intelligent UI guidance still identifies GPT-6 Luna, while the separate GPT-6 model guidance lists GPT-5.6 Luna as the default.

Intelligent UI is supported from Instant through Extra High reasoning on eligible web and updated app clients. OpenAI’s current model guidance says the separate Pro reasoning option, powered by GPT-6 Astra, does not support it. Older ChatGPT desktop applications for macOS and Windows do not support the capability; OpenAI recommends using the web experience instead.

The 7 October launch applied to ChatGPT’s Chat experience, not a simultaneous upgrade of the models powering Work or Codex. OpenAI’s Intelligent UI documentation likewise excludes the interface feature from Work and Voice, keeping the new interaction format distinct from those other products.
