BILL rolls out finance AI controls, invoice risk intelligence and a chat beta

BILL introduces pre-payment invoice checks, AI activity controls, automated document classification and expanded chat capabilities, with new features rolling out in stages.

The phased rollout adds pre-payment invoice checks, an AI activity log, control settings and automated document labelling, while broader natural-language assistance remains in beta with waitlist access.

BILL announced a package of finance AI capabilities on 19 October 2026, including invoice anomaly checks before payments are scheduled and a central hub for reviewing and controlling automated actions. The financial software company is also adding AI-assisted account setup, automated document labelling and expanded natural-language chat, although the latter remains in beta.

In its official announcement, BILL said the features are rolling out in stages to businesses and accounting firms. Its October product updates describe the controls and new document-handling features, while customers interested in the expanded Chat with BILL experience are directed to a beta waitlist.

Invoice risk checks flag unusual amounts before payment scheduling

BILL’s Risk Intelligence compares invoices with vendors’ established billing history during the approval process. If an amount departs from the usual pattern, the system flags it for review before the payment is scheduled. The flag identifies a potential discrepancy, not necessarily fraud or a confirmed billing mistake.

BILL said Risk Intelligence identified an average of $138,000 in mistaken or unusual payments per customer during August and September 2026. The company also estimated more than 1,800 days of manual work saved across customers during that period. Those are company-reported results; the announcement does not provide an independent assessment or a detailed sample breakdown.

The placement of the check allows a discrepancy to be investigated while the invoice is awaiting approval rather than after money has moved.

AI controls hub records actions and allows tools to be switched off

A new controls hub lets finance teams review actions taken by BILL AI, switch individual AI tools on or off and adjust how much work they perform. BILL’s product updates identify controls for risk intelligence, W-9 and transaction-coding automations, alongside an AI activity log.

BILL is also introducing AI-assisted onboarding, which can populate a business profile, suggest products, help add vendors and assign default approvers. The company says users review and adjust the suggested details before applying them. Separately, incoming invoices and W-9 forms can now be identified and labelled in the accounts payable inbox, with uncertain classifications flagged for correction.

These features address different parts of the back office: transaction review, oversight of AI actions, account setup and document intake. They do not constitute a single fully autonomous finance workflow.

Expanded Chat with BILL remains in beta

The expanded chat experience is designed to answer natural-language questions about upcoming vendor payments, invoice status, card spending, recurring bills and receivables. BILL describes this broader capability as a beta with a waitlist, rather than a generally available feature for all customers.

In a separate connection option, BILL offers an external Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration for querying financial operations through supported AI assistants. Its MCP Server documentation describes the connection as a read-only beta, currently limited to eligible US-based BILL organisations.

BILL announced the broader AI package on 19 October, with capabilities rolling out in phases. Some invoice-risk checks had already been documented in August. The company has not announced a general-availability date for the expanded chat beta.
